✍ TEXT 001

On behalf of M. Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, I am issuing an open call for able-bodied, just men to join the re-established Police Service. The Prefecture is currently housed within the fourth district court house. There you will be interviewed and tested for fitness in the Service.

Should you have any inquiries about scheduling and expectations, you will call or send for Inspector Javert.

What is a Police Service?

[It is a long moment before Javert responds to this one.]

Certainly you do not intend to apply.

Currently, I am merely asking what you are recruiting for.

You say you are merely asking! That is evidence enough for me.

It is a service to maintain the order.

My world did not have a service like Police, Leaders kept order within their tribes.

So yes, I was merely asking.

[Another long pause.]

Now you have learned something new.

[Perhaps Jinana would not catch the twinge of sarcasm, but...]

You say you come from a tribal world. Which country do you mean?

Manipura. Territory of the Maribel Tribe.

[Though Jinana cannot see Javert, he is making careful note of this information like the dutiful spy. He was not naive, nor was he blind to the implications. He had already read in Somarium's law records that this was a worldless country, that there were people here from places he could not understand.

It didn't make it any less disconcerting, but he needed to get a start learning about every citizen in this nation if he were to be Edgeworth's representative of authority.

He may have to make another visit to the library soon, as horrid as reading was. He was growing weary of it, but it gave him the tools he needed in his position.

Eventually, he sends her another response.]

You will wait for M. Edgeworth's post. There you will read about the law.

Authority.

Those before you or I.

Authority worth obeying? Or do you follow for the sake of following?

For authority to be authority it must be worth following. Otherwise the unworthy figure does not belong in authority.

[... And that would be exactly why Javert was so reluctant to reaccept his position.]

I suppose I will have to wait and see for myself. I will not blindly follow a nameless authority because they claim to be worthy. I have seen the worst occur from that very thing.
